Monday, July 8

5:00 - 5:30 pm – Check in at Beauregard-Keyes House. Get acquainted with other attendees.

5:30 pm - 7:30 pm -- Session I, Beauregard-Keyes House. Richard Louth, Director of the Southeastern Louisiana Writing Project, kicks off the retreat with a celebration of our publication in Louisiana Literature and radio show on KSLU. Includes a poetry reading by LA Poet Laureate Jack Bedell and cocktail reception.

 

Tuesday, July 9

9:30 am - 10:30 am -- Session II, BK House. Richard Louth prepares writers with an overview of the retreat and an introduction to the New Orleans Writing Marathon.

 

10:30 am - 4:30 pm -- Writing Marathon, Day 1: “A Traditional New Orleans Writing Marathon.” SLWP teacher-consultants and NOWM leadership team members take groups on a French Quarter writing marathon.

 

5:30 pm - 7:30 pm – BK House. Complimentary cocktails and daily read-around.  Writers share their experiences and short pieces they wrote on today’s marathon. Read-arounds recorded nightly for possible inclusion in radio documentary.

 

Wednesday, July 10

9:30 am - 10:30 am -- Session III, BK House. Author Bev Marshall on the Writing Marathon and Memoir.

 

10:30 am - 4:30 pm -- Writing Marathon, Day 2:  Focused and Traditional Writing Marathon Options.

 

5:30 pm - 7:30 pm -- BK House. Complimentary cocktail reception and read-around, plus Richard Louth and NOWM leadership team members prepare writers discuss “focused writing marathons” including writing marathons for poets, for fiction writers, and for creative nonfiction writers as well as reading/writing marathons. Susan Martens discusses "groundtruthing” writing marathons.

 

Thursday, July 11

9:30 am - 10:30 am-- Session IV, BK House. LA Poet Laureate Jack Bedell leads participants in a writing workshop

10:30 am - 4:30 pm -- Writing Marathon Day 3:  Focused and Traditional Writing Marathon Options.

 

5:30 pm – 7:30 pm -- BK House. Complimentary cocktail reception and read-around.

 

Friday, July 12

Participants write on their own, form their own writing marathon groups, or work on revisions before we gather for closure.

 

10:00 am - Noon -- Session VI, BK House. Final gathering as the retreat comes to a close. A final toast (complimentary New Orleans breakfast cocktails provided!) and a last chance read-around before saying goodbye.
